Cancer Neuroscience and Reiki: What Happens When We View Cancer Through the Lens of the Nervous System?

One of the most fascinating developments in cancer research today is the emergence of a field known as cancer neuroscience.

For decades, scientists focused largely on the genetic mutations that drive cancer growth. But researchers are now discovering that the nervous system may play a much more active role than previously imagined. Nerves are not simply innocent bystanders surrounding tumours. They communicate with cancer cells, influence tumour growth, contribute to pain, and may even help facilitate the spread of disease.

These discoveries raise an interesting question for those of us working in holistic health:

If the nervous system is so deeply involved in health, healing, and disease, what role might nervous system support play in a person's cancer journey?

This understanding came from Dr William Hwang who encountered as a medical student while on a rotation caring for an elderly patient with pancreatic cancer “what struck me as the most horrible part of the experience for them was the pain,” he recalls.

Hwang wanted to understand where that intractable pain was coming from. So, he asked Mari Mino-Kenudson, an HMS professor of pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, to walk him through the patient’s tissue slides under a microscope. That’s when he saw a nerve encased within a tumor, being prodded and compressed by cancer cells. The patient was suffering from perineural invasion, a painful phenomenon in which malignant cells surround and invade nerves.

“I wondered why cancer cells would form such intimate connections with nerves. What do they derive from this relationship, and how can we intervene?” Dr Hwang

The Nervous System: The Body's Master Communicator

Researchers studying cancer neuroscience often describe the nervous system as a master regulator of the body.

With a growing realisation that the nervous system may not be the innocent bystander in cancer that it was once considered to be.

Every heartbeat, every breath, every immune response, every emotional experience is influenced by the vast network of nerves connecting the brain and body.

The nervous system is constantly gathering information, adapting to stress, coordinating repair, and maintaining balance.

What scientists are now finding is that cancer cells appear capable of interacting with these same systems. In some cases, tumours can even exploit the body's normal repair mechanisms for their own growth.

This doesn't mean that stress causes cancer or that relaxation cures it. The biology is far more complex than that.

What it does suggest is that the nervous system deserves greater attention as part of the overall picture of health.

Dr Richard Wong who has a great interest in cancer neuroscience has further studies cancer cells and the relationship with nerves in the body. He has found that cancer seems to have an uncanny ability to co-opt the nervous system’s own maintenance processes. “A theme we see repeatedly is that cancer is kind of like a traumatic event,” Wong says. “It destroys tissues around it and creates trauma in the area. And then it triggers and utilises these innate programs in the host, in the environment, that try to repair the injury. But paradoxically, these repair mechanisms may actually promote cancer progression.”

Reiki and Nervous System Regulation

One of the most commonly reported effects of Reiki is a profound sense of relaxation.

Clients frequently describe feeling calmer, more grounded, and less overwhelmed after a session. Some report improved sleep, reduced anxiety, and a greater sense of emotional wellbeing.

While researchers are still investigating exactly how Reiki produces these effects, many practitioners observe that Reiki appears to support a shift from a state of stress and hypervigilance toward one of rest and relaxation.

This is significant because the nervous system operates differently when the body feels safe.

In states of chronic stress, the body prioritises survival. When we enter a more relaxed state, different physiological processes become possible, including rest, recovery, emotional processing, and healing.

A New Conversation Between Science and Holistic Care

The emerging field of cancer neuroscience is not validating Reiki as a cancer treatment.

What it is doing, however, is highlighting the importance of the nervous system in ways that conventional medicine is only beginning to fully appreciate.

For Reiki practitioners, this creates an opportunity for meaningful dialogue.

Rather than asking whether Reiki can treat cancer, perhaps a more useful question is:

How can we support the nervous system of someone living with cancer?

How can we help create moments of peace amidst uncertainty?

How can we support emotional resilience, reduce distress, and encourage a sense of connection during one of life's most challenging experiences?

These are questions that sit comfortably within the scope of Reiki practice.

The Future May Be More Integrated Than We Think

As researchers continue to uncover the intricate relationship between nerves and cancer cells, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the body is not a collection of separate systems operating independently.

Everything is connected.

The nervous system communicates with the immune system, the endocrine system, and the organs of the body in a constant flow of information.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of cancer neuroscience is not simply what it reveals about cancer, but what it reveals about the interconnected nature of human health.

For those of us in the Reiki community, this emerging science offers an invitation to ask deeper questions.

If supporting the nervous system matters, and if creating states of calm, safety, and balance matters, then perhaps Reiki has an important role to play alongside conventional care as part of their overall healing journey.
